Business Networking’s Hugest Fib
By Keith Woolgar
There may be certainly no doubt the fact that face-to-face business networking is an example of the best, if not probably the most powerful means to promote yourself, your cause or your small company. It is a fact.
Usually, business networking is cheaper when compared with normal marketing, and ties you professionally to your business, right in front of your purchasers or would-be consumers. Bring your schedule to an event, ink an appointment immediately! Hours of cold calling and target promoting; stand aside! Who wouldn’t rather meet their consumers and would-be purchasers in an casual, relaxed, non-confrontational setting like a business networking event or via a networking group?
Go figure! So why else might there be countless networking breakfast meetings, networking happy hours, speed business networking events (you name it) and a lot more popping up all the time?
Gone are the times of being constrained to joining chambers of commerce and other service organizations, because now you can meet, greet and glad hand other business networkers around the clock, seven days a week if you wish to. Consider, BNI and LeTip are networking brand names comprised of thousands of business networkers alone…it’s a social networking society, folks! Now, with the more recent “online venues” like Facebook, social networking seems to have gone viral as housewives, Realtors, cake bakers and Fortune 500 companies interact via the new “social media”, that wasn’t even a popular term only three short years ago. We as a society network, network, network!
The lie is that “networking” is effective. The reality is , that going to networking events, enrolling in the groups, being on Facebook, etc. doesn’t work whatever as a stand alone action to closing sales or engaging in business. Yes, it takes a lot more…
Have you ever returned from the business networking event with a handful of business cards with zero resulting leads? Like, zero? Yes, you have. Did you ever stop a business networking group because “it didn’t work”? Of course you did.
Facts are, the churn rate (existing users dropping out becoming replaced by fresh paid members) may be up to 50% per year in a given networking organization. Half dropping out, being replaced by new, enthusiastic newbies, who will in turn drop out aftera lame attempt at making networking work for them.
