Hannspree HT09 28-Inch LCD HDTV Television

I was in the market for a new TV to replace my failing old 26″. After reading the 6 reviews for this set on amazon.com, I thought this was an ideal set. The price was reasonable and seemed a good deal for an HD TV. It was a little larger than my old one, yet would fit in my entertainment center. The size is the only good thing about it. This is my first HD set and I am not happy with it at all. I had checked out other sets in stores and watched HD on friend’s TVs and the quality of this set in my opinion is Sub Par. The picture quality is not any better than my old non HD TV, in fact I think my old one was better. Also the only way I can get a Wide Screen picture is to run it through a digital converter I had for my old analog set. Otherwise even with the aspect set in Zoom all I get is a picture with 3″ inch boarders on each side. The sound is OK but nothing great. The remote is very user “unfriendly” you cannot just enter a number and get your desired channel. You must enter a number plus - 1 otherwise you get nothing. I called Hannspree customer service and they were absolutely NO HELP. The woman I spoke to kept putting me on hold and finally after 45 minutes told me that was the way it was and had no answer as to why, but that she would inform the engineers of the renote issue.

In conclusion, I believe all the rewiews I read about how great this set is must have been written by Hannspree employees. I would send it back,if I could, but it would cost more than it is worth.

Very nice picture. QAM works fine. Does fine in computer monitor mode.

    Gotchas:

Disabled channels reappear. I keep getting Hispanic and infomercial one enabled again that I have zero interest in.

Channels flip at times. I’ll be watching NBC and it goes to another NBC and channel switch stops working. I have to select a new channel to get control back. That might be Comcast.

The remote is evidently using proprietary codes. I wrote their support for code # to use with a third party one and they had no idea for this model but offered the older model ones that aren’t the same. The remote is awkward and lacks powers so I’d really like to swap it out.

It’d be a 1 or 2 if the picture wasn’t decent in all modes.

    ADDENDUM:

I came back are lowered the stars to two. It it was a nice computer monitor that would be a one.

When you use this as a computer monitor and choose 1920×1200 resolution, as you should be able to do, some parts of the screen disappear under the edges. I have read this at other sites and not seen a solution - does anyone have one? I am using HDMI connections at both ends. So far I have had to reduce the resolution and now have black bands around the visible area.

  4. The size was correct to fit my needs. But what a loss, picture worse than a crt based set, sound not special, just not worth keeping. Hope that Amazon and Tiger direct stand by the product. Better to spend the money to ship it back than to keep a substandard product. Who ever wrote positive reults must have received a product unlike mine. Buyer keep your money in your pocket, this is not worth anything.

Come on, seriously. Hasn’t anyone noticed that this TV has a 16:10 aspect ratio? All other HD sets are 16:9, and none of the cable or satellite companies broadcast in 16:10, nor does this set correct for the odd aspect ratio. I can’t believe that nobody has complained about the fact that this tv stretches all the pictures vertically, making all the people look slightly taller and skinnier. Maybe this doesn’t matter to those who have reviewed it previously, but it drove me freaking nuts!! Granted, it’s only slight, but it really really bugged me.

That being said, the clarity of the picture is great, the size and resolution are great for the price, but I could not get past the odd aspect ratio. I had to return the tv.
